Frequently asked
Plain answers, in the order people actually ask them.
We grouped these by what stage you are at: getting started, rates and fees, security, and support. If a question is not here, the contact page reaches the team directly.
01
Getting started
Trocah is a peer-to-peer marketplace for currency. Verified people post offers at the rate they want. Other verified people take them. We do not hold inventory and we do not quote a spread. The rate you see in the app is the rate you trade at.
Mostly people moving money between Canada and Nigeria, in either direction. Students paying tuition, freelancers paid abroad and spending at home, small importers, anyone tired of the bank spread. We support CAD and NGN today, with USD and EUR pairs on the roadmap.
Verification runs through Veriff inside the app. You scan a government-issued ID, take a quick selfie, and pass a liveness check. Most people are cleared in under a minute. You only verify once, and so does everyone you trade with.
Either post your own offer (you set the amount and the rate you want), or browse the feed and pick someone else's. Open a chat. Agree on the final rate. Both sides enter their PIN. Settlement happens in under a second. Bank payout follows for free between Canadian and Nigerian banks.
02
Rates and fees
No. We do not set the rate, the marketplace does. Two users agree on a number in chat and that number is what settles. No middle-rate, no margin baked into the receipt.
Bank payouts to Canadian and Nigerian banks are free. Other corridors run at the marketplace rate, paid only to your counterparty, not to us. We will tell you if a corridor will cost you anything before you confirm.
In-app settlement happens in under a second once both PINs are entered. Bank payouts depend on your bank. Interac e-Transfer and Nigeria's NIBSS rails typically land within a minute, sometimes longer at peak hours.
CAD↔NGN is live with growing liquidity. EUR and USD pairs are next. The corridors with the most diaspora demand get prioritised.
03
Security and disputes
Yes. Trocah is registered as a Money Services Business with FINTRAC under registration number C100000788. We work with Veriff for identity, Paga for payments, and Comply for transaction monitoring.
Identity documents stay with Veriff. We store the verification result, not the raw ID. Chat history between counterparties is encrypted in transit and at rest. We do not sell data and we do not need to.
Settlement only completes when both PINs are entered, so partial trades do not happen by accident. If a counterparty disputes a trade post-settlement, the chat thread and PIN trail are visible to both sides and to our compliance team. Our MLROs have over a decade of experience in financial services.
Settled trades are final. The PIN-confirmation step is there exactly to make sure both parties agreed before funds move. If something looks wrong before you tap, do not tap. Open a fresh negotiation.
04
Support
Inside the app, every trade has a help action that opens a thread with our support team. From the website, write to us via the contact page. We aim for under 24 hours on weekdays, faster on the active corridors.
The same contact page or a tweet works. Trocah was started at a student society and product decisions are still made closer to users than to boardrooms. We read everything, even when we cannot ship right away.
